ACT 4, Scene 6 & 7 Guided Questions

Act IV

7. What turn of events does Hamlet report to Horatio in his letter in 4.6?

He states that they were overthrown by some pirates, but were kind enough to let him go and the entire thing was a set up for his death.  He also asks him to allow these men to give the king some letter and to come see him ASAP.

8. Claudius comes up with a very complicated plan for Laertes to execute his revenge in 4.7. What is it? Notice what Laertes wants to do (4.7)!

Laertes wants to cut Hamlet's throat in church, but Claudius wants to set them up for a duel where Laertes will be able to pick his own sword. He even suggest putting poison on it that will kill Hamlet even with the slightest cut. There back up plan is to trick Hamlet into drinking poison. 


9. How do we learn of Ophelia’s death? What are its odd circumstances?

Ophelia has drowned. She fell from a tree and rather than try to save herself, she allows herself to die.
